5 Things You May Not Know About Freebirds

“Fast casual” has been around since the mid-90s and Freebirds was one of the originals, first in California in 1987 and expanding to Texas in 1990, offering custom mission-style burritos as well as custom bowls, nachos, tacos, quesadillas, and salads. They have a high-energy, engaging atmosphere where “Tribe Members” go above and beyond to assist guests in creating the ultimate burrito experience.


Freebirds has a cult following, too – I was first introduced to Freebirds in Addison by coworkers who became Freebirds followers (Freebirdies? Freebirdheads?) while at school in College Station, and its rock concert roadie atmosphere was appealing to my inner rocker chick. However, the plotline of offering custom meals is so popular these days, you can get everything custom now, from sandwiches to salads to pizza to pasta to burgers. So what sets Freebirds apart? Here are 5 things you may not have known about Freebirds:

  1. They only use fresh ingredients. And that’s not a trend for them, they’ve always done it so it’s not a tagline.
  2. Their meat marinades are gluten free for those who can’t have glutes. 😉
  3. They offer a gluten free tortilla option
  4. EVERYTHING is made in-house. From their marinades, to their guacamole and sauces, they’re all made in-house!
  5. They have vegan options. I was surprised to see Calabacitas (made with veggies, spices, and tempeh) for the cow-huggers out there!
  6. (I never claimed to be good at math) Their meat isn’t overcooked and dry like other walk-the-line joints.


These key facts make a monster-sized difference in the quality, taste, and eating experience. I like my meat tender and moist (who doesn’t?!) so when it comes to bird, I’m a dark meat kind of gal and I was glad to learn that they offer spiced dark thigh meat with cayenne and paprika.

And don’t forget, you can get custom nachos, quesadillas, tacos, and salads, too! They still offer the “Monster” and “Super Monster” burrito sizes for those of you who really want a burrito the size of your arm – and you’ll feel less guilty about it, too, because GOOD STUFF.
